An examination of the three most recently issued English translations of Endo's works, with their various Christian themes, may help account for the particularly affinity that Western readers have for his work. The earliest of these works, the novel The Sea and Poison (1958) represents Endo's attempt to assess the problem of individual responsibility, especially as it relates to the acts of Japanese medical personnel during World War II. In The Girl I Left Behind (1964), Endo took a distinctly Christian direction, and treated the virtues of compassion and self-abnegation as Christian values.
